ThayerMahan is looking for motivated hydrographic surveyors/field technicians to join our growing Seabed Systems Group.  Ideal candidates will be technically inclined with an interest in and a minimum of entry level experience or knowledge in the field of hydrographic surveying or a background in a similar field with an interest in diversifying skillsets.

The Seabed Systems Group supports a variety of projects, including on-water and remote survey support, vessel integrations, data collection/processing, and overseeing survey and ROV operations. The team supports the organization’s growth by providing training and growth opportunities to develop subject matter knowledge and explore new professional opportunities in the offshore sector.

Role at ThayerMahan

  • Partner with team members and other groups to support a variety of projects. These projects typically include the opportunity to live abroad ships that work primarily off the East Coast and occasionally internationally.
  • Support remote piloting/collection/processing efforts, including participation in 24-hour operations.
  • Collect and process hydrographic and other sensor data utilizing industry standard software.
  • Perform sensor calibrations and data QA/QC.
  • Participate in QHSE roles ensuring safe and sustainable work practices.
  • Author reports and proposals in compliance with client and organizational guidelines.
  • Maintain project logs and documentation.
  • Present survey data and represent the survey team in project meetings.
  • Support operational planning.
  • Utilize GIS tools to track and present project development maps.
  • Build and foster healthy team relationships and effective communication.

Your Skills & Attributes

  • Be willing to travel up to 4+ months per year.
  • Have a minimum of 1-3 years of experience in hydrographic surveying.
  • Be knowledgeable in interfacing and operating hydrographic survey equipment, i.e. GNSS, inertial navigation, multibeam, and sidescan sonar systems.
  • Experience and/or willingness to work on live-aboard offshore vessels.
  • Have knowledge in collecting, analyzing, and processing hydrographic survey data. Experience with Hypack, Qinsy, Caris, and/or equivalent collection/processing software desired.
  • Have GIS experience.
  • Possess excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Be willing to support at-sea system testing and data collection.

Requirements

  • Due to our work with the U.S. Government, this role legally requires that you are a U.S. citizen.
  • Ability to obtain all offshore credentials required such as: USCG physical, OGEK physical, GWO/STCW, TWIC.
  • Pass a rigorous background investigation.

Other Desired Qualifications

  • Technical degree in Engineering/Hydrography/Surveying.
  • Experience with geophysical surveying/data a plus.
  • ROV/AUV experience.
  • SAS (Synthetic Aperture Sonar) Experience.
  • Experience in towing and collecting data using hydrographic sensors (i.e. sidescan sonar systems) is preferred.
  • Project management and team-leader experience.
