Acoustic Analyst – Level 1 (Entry Level)

About Us:

ThayerMahan leads the field in Underwater Acoustic Monitoring, particularly in our Persistent Surveillance Systems division. We specialize in monitoring and localizing passive acoustic contacts around the clock, catering to diverse contracts. Our team is committed to delivering precise and timely reporting on both natural and artificial acoustic contacts. Additionally, we handle all piloting internally for a range of unmanned vehicles equipped with acoustic payloads.

Position Summary:

We are seeking individuals with a foundational understanding of acoustic analysis, developed either through our in-house Acoustic Analyst Apprenticeship program (currently in development) or equivalent experience with active/passive acoustic monitoring systems. As an Acoustic Analyst, you will play a vital role in our 24/7 watch cycles, evaluating acoustically received sources, determining their positions, drafting reports, and supporting troubleshooting procedures for our internal acoustic monitoring program. The role involves operational support for contracts, with minimal sea time expected (less than 5%).

Responsibilities:

  • Support 24-hour watch cycles.
  • Evaluate acoustically received sources.
  • Determine positions for acoustically held sources.
  • Draft reports on acoustically held sources.
  • Facilitate troubleshooting procedures for internal acoustic monitoring program.
  • Operate acoustic monitoring program.
  • Provide contract support.

Qualifications and Educational Requirements:

  • Prior enlisted STS/STG (4 years and below) or completed the ThayerMahan Acoustic Apprenticeship Program.

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in high school-level arithmetic.
  • Ability to read nautical charts.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for articulating data findings.
  • Understanding of PC file structure.

Preferred Skills:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Oceanography, Data Analysis, or related fields focusing on underwater physics or data analysis.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:

  • Ability to work at a monitor for extended periods.
  • Must pass physical tests for sight and hearing.

Travel Requirements (If Applicable):

  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Active passport required; willingness to travel.
